What Time Should You Book Your Southampton Cruise Transfer? A Terminal-by-Terminal Answer

We are asked this constantly, usually a few days before sailing and almost always in the same words: “the ship gets in at 8, what time should I book the car?” The honest answer is that the docking time on your itinerary is not the time you will be ready to leave — and the difference is not fixed. It depends on your terminal, your deck, whether you carry your own bags off, and how busy the hall is that morning.

So rather than guess, here is what our passengers actually book. The figures below come from 162 completed transfers out of Southampton’s cruise terminals, 145 of which name a specific terminal and are broken out in the table. They are not a claim about how long disembarkation takes — we do not measure that, and nobody honestly can. They are a record of the times real cruise passengers chose, and they cluster tightly enough to be useful.

Southampton cruise terminals: when people actually leave

Reading the table. The middle 80% column is the useful one: it is the window that four out of five passengers fall inside. Ocean Terminal stretching to 10:00 and Horizon starting at 05:00 tells you these are not interchangeable — if you are on Horizon and you book blind for 07:00, you may be an hour early or two hours late.

Why the docking time misleads

A ship berthing at 06:30 does not put you on the pavement at 06:30. Between the two sit port clearance, the staged disembarkation calls your cruise line runs by deck or luggage colour, and the walk through a luggage hall holding a few thousand suitcases. If you carry your own bags off you can be out very early — that is what the 04:00 and 05:00 pickups in our data are. If you are on a later call, mid-morning is normal.

The practical approach: book for the time you expect to be outside, tell us the ship and terminal, and message us if you are out sooner or later. We would far rather move the time than have you standing in the rain.

Questions we get asked

What time should I book my transfer from Southampton cruise terminal?

Across 162 transfers we have run from Southampton, 07:00 is the single most-booked pickup slot at every one of the five terminals. The median is 06:30 at City Cruise Terminal and 07:00 at Horizon, Ocean, QEII and Mayflower. If you have no other information, 07:00 is the safe default. If you are on a fly-cruise with a fixed flight, work backwards from the flight instead and tell us the flight number.

Is that the same as the time the ship docks?

No, and this is the thing most people get wrong. The ship berths well before anyone walks off. Between docking and standing on the kerb with your cases you have clearance, the staged colour-coded or deck-by-deck calls, and finding your luggage in the hall. Book the car for when you expect to be outside the building, not for the docking time printed on your cruise itinerary.

What if we get off earlier or later than we expected?

Tell us as soon as you know and we move the pickup — there is no charge for changing the time. Message the booking reference on WhatsApp and it is amended in minutes. In practice a lot of our Southampton passengers message us from the luggage hall.

Which Southampton terminal will my ship be at?

Southampton has five: City Cruise Terminal (Berth 101, SO15 1BS), Horizon Cruise Terminal (Berth 102, SO15 1AW), Ocean Cruise Terminal (Berths 46/47, SO14 3QN), QEII Cruise Terminal (Berths 38/39, SO14 3GG) and Mayflower Cruise Terminal (Berth 106, SO15 1HJ). Your cruise line confirms the terminal shortly before sailing — it is on your e-tickets. Give us the terminal name or the berth number and the driver goes to the right gate.

Does the terminal change what time I should book?

A little. City Cruise Terminal runs earliest — 53% of our pickups there are before 07:00 and the earliest we have run is 04:00. Ocean Terminal runs latest, with the middle 80% of pickups spread from 06:30 to 10:00. Horizon has the widest spread of all, 05:00 to 09:30, so it is the one worth confirming rather than guessing.

Can we stop at Stonehenge or Windsor on the way to the airport?

Yes, and it is one of our most-requested cruise runs. Stonehenge is roughly 40 minutes from Southampton and then about 90 minutes on to Heathrow, so a disembarkation around 08:00 leaves comfortable time for a stop before an afternoon flight. Waiting time at the stop is charged separately and quoted up front, so you see the whole figure before you book.

How much luggage will fit? Cruise cases are big.

Saloon 3 passengers / 2 large cases; Executive car 2 / 2; Estate 3 / 3; MPV 4 / 4; 7-seater 7 / 6; 8-seater 8 / 7. Cruise cases are bulkier than airport cases, so size the vehicle on your cases rather than your headcount — a family of four coming off a two-week cruise usually needs the MPV, not a saloon.

Can you fit child seats for a cruise transfer?

Child seats are free in any MPV. An estate takes one at £10 per seat. A saloon or executive car cannot take a child seat at all, so if you need one, book an estate or larger. Tell us the ages when you book and the seats are fitted before we collect you.

Do you cover Dover, Portsmouth and Tilbury as well?

Yes. The pattern is much the same: 07:00 is the most-booked slot at Dover, Portsmouth and Tilbury too. Dover pickups spread from 05:00 to 10:00, Portsmouth from 06:00 to 15:00, Tilbury 07:00 to 08:00. Greenwich, Liverpool and Harwich are covered on request.

How long will the driver wait if we are held up getting off?

You get 45 minutes of free waiting at a cruise terminal, measured from the pickup time you booked — the same allowance we give at airports, because disembarkation is just as unpredictable as immigration. Elsewhere the allowance is 15 minutes. If you can see you are going to be longer than that, message us and we will move the pickup rather than run the clock.
